Wood headed to disabled list

MESA, Ariz. -- The Cubs are shutting down Kerry Wood until further notice after he experienced shoulder problems during Sunday's outing against the Angels in which Wood gave up a three-run homer in one inning.

Wood will be placed on the disabled list and won't be available for at least a few weeks.

"He obviously didn't have the same strength or threw the ball as well, and he had some discomfort after the game," general manager Jim Hendry said Monday. "Today, he had some more stiffness than normal, more than he's had earlier in camp, which had gone smoothly except for his triceps (injury)."

Wood was to be evaluated by doctors later Monday morning. He opted not to have surgery last August after a rotator cuff tear was discovered, but his performance has been sporadic in limited spring action.

"We're not worried about Opening Day right now," Hendry said. "Let's be cognizant of getting him right, see what people have to say when they look at him today."

Wood was not available for comment. Hendry said Wood was disapointed after working during the offseason to prepare for 2007.

"He's feels badly that he's not 100 percent," Hendry said. "Hopefully we'll get him right. And hopefully it will not be significant.

"It's not about helping us next Monday as much as it's about helping us over the long haul."

Say it ain't so? What are we going to do without good old Splinters on the zit this season?

zzzzzzzzzzzz...

Journalism 101 textbook, Chapter One: What is news?

"Man Bites Dog"

Did you say Kerry Wood is totally healthy and is expected to give the Cubs 30 starts this year? Oh, wait! No, actually you didn't say that. Actually, he will be lucky to even pitch before the all star break this year-- just like almost every year of his career, right?

I think I'll go back to my nap. :)

That's really not fair. Reading about Kerry Wood's latest injury is more like watching a train wreck happening before your eyes in..... very........... slow...................motion.

Actually, Dude, this puts me in favor of winning the bet. Finally having a season where we're not counting on Woody to play is great news, we can finally focus on developing new pitchers with stronger arms.

The bet shall be mine!!!

It's kind of sad, really, for Mr. Wood, all that talent, but career ruined by injuries. Still, lookkng at this in context, there have been many, many like him in the history of baseball. If he had pitched 20 years ago, or even now if he had pitched for a team in a smaller market, who ever would even have paid any attention to him.

If he hadn't had that one 20 strike-out game in his rookie year, he'd never have gained his "super-star" status.

Poor Kerry Wood. As if playing for the Cubs wasn't a bad enough break for him he has to get hurt all the time. Just kidding Cubs fans, hell my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates haven't had a winning season since 92. The Cubies did keep them out of the basement last year though.
