Well given the unit is apparently running again, maybe a start relay on its way out?

Sorry for the confusion. Just the fan runs and the panel buttons function normally to read and set desired % level, see filter timer, set blower speed lo-med-hi. It's the compressor that's not coming on any more. I run the fan continuously.

The only thing I might try before giving up on something like this would be to see if you can jump the compressor to eliminate a circuit problem.

Might not even bother with that unless I felt like tinkering (which I never have time for), and buy a new one (but I'd probably save old one in one of my shipping containers for some time in the future when "I might get around to testing it")(just kidding, sort of)(well I am getting better, filled a 40 yard container w metal scrap out of my yard last year). Haha

Been running fan constantly since purchase Sept 2017. Compressor would cycle as it was required; less in winter, more in summer, as expected. Noticed it had stopped producing water output about a week ago, and the basement was beginning to feel and slightly smell more humid than "normal", as the other side of the basement dehumidifier was not keeping up for both sides.

Yeah, at ~$300 I would expect > 2yr lifespan (warranty is 1yr of course) but for the short term, a new one is more likely given my abilities and desire.

Yeah you would think so. At least it's not a fridg or freezer or more importantly a beer cooler. (LOL).
I tried the google for a wire diagram, looking for some test points but as you said, "no joy".
Slightly related, I ran a shop fridg for almost a year on just a timer. the "cold control" crapped out and I bypassed it. Set timer for about 35-40% run time. It would freeze some stuff if door wasn't opened a couple times a day. as a beer fridg it worked great till it gave up the ghost completely.
Sorry for the derail,,

You might have been able to run shop fridge easier and have it live longer if you had off an inkbird or johnson external controller. Same principle as my glycol chiller, which is just stripped window unit running on an inkbird 308. In theory, one could do the same with a dehumidifier and one of those inkbird controls that runs off humidity. Time and controller not worth trying unless you already had one of the controllers, I'd think.

I started taking it apart, looking for something obvious. Lo and behold the compressor is actually running and getting hot, just the coils are not chilling to dew point, to me that means loss of refrigerant and beyond my desire/ability to recharge to find/fix leak. It is an ex-dehumidifier, gone on to meet its maker, joined the bleedin choir eternal.

Yeah , maybe. I had thought about using one of those just never got around to getting one The timer worked pretty good all in all. The box developed a system leak and I chose to let die. As far as the timer or a "stat" controlling it, I doubt that would have made much difference life span wise. It would have to had run about the same amount of time either way to keep the same temp. Cycle time and thusly temp swing would have been different between the two. And I had the timer,,,,

Probably you are right, unless some refriderant made it all the way around the in liquid state, due to loop being getting colder than design specs.

All engineers do nowadays is Google :)

All patients do nowadays is Google.

"I'm sorry Ma'am. While I do recognize the value of the fifteen minutes you spent reading Dr. Oz on the internet, I think my Masters degree and 25 years of clinical experience carry a little more authority and I won't be prescribing that medication. Not only is your self diagnosis incorrect but the medicine you want me to prescribe is totally inappropriate for both what you think you have and for what you really do have. (Which, BTW, is a case of terminal stupidity.) Go home, go to bed, drink lots of fluids, take two Tylenol and when you get up in the morning take a sledgehammer to your computer. We'll both feel better. You Madam, and your ilk, are the reason I want to switch careers to veterinary medicine."

I was at a startup and mentored this CEOs high school aged kid. The CEO pretty much pressured him into our group. I laughed looking at his resume and see Stanford programming summer camp and all these good programming classes he's taken. It was going to happen one way or another and we had to find a place where he could do no harm. I had a good side project that needed to be done and argued the kid probably has taken more hours in a classroom than everyone in the room combined( as all were beyond 40).

The kid did a good job except for panicking every so often to impress his dad. I watched over him and pretty much all the information he dug out of forums and the web once I asked where he got the answers. I let it ride to see how'd he do. Not that bad. Come to find out most of the grads these days get their info from cut and paste from the web. Kinda scares me.

My manager, the VP of engineering, asked me at the end why I'd take on the task. I said "In two years that lil f- will be my boss!"

I'm forever telling new kids who want to become nurses to become plumbers instead.

I get feedback from their clinical instructors that these 20 - 30 year old's think I'm a 'well meaning grouch who just doesn't get it'." Then then we, the clinical instructors and I, who are just as jaded as I am but get paid to put on a good face for the kids, just laugh, laugh, laugh.

Some new grads hubby and I see in various discussion groups are stupid, lazy spoon feeders that who knows how the hell they completed a degree program based on some questions they ask. When a quick google search would give them an answer They instead post some pathetic appeal to th discussion board. Ticks me off. How do I start a practice, get on the insurance panels etc. ”For a grand a month I’ll coach you.” Crickets... they STFU. :bigmug:

I use to work at a very PC company. It was all they cared about. I won't get political but I interviewed a recent grad there that had co-oped for two years. It was for entry level in my group. I asked what he wanted to do. He told me he's already done my job and it didn't interest him. He wanted to be my manager and tell me what to do. Those were his exact words. Ummm so his request got taken very seriously. If he ticked one more box in the checklist I think it would have happened. I don't work there anymore.

I'd go electrician or HVAC over plumber, but PTN's advice is good from I can see. Quite a few people around here worked their way up in the trades to a few trucks, make good livings and have some control over their lives. Of course they have to be somewhat organized and actually do work, which seems a tall order for some.

At least nurses can get a college degree and earn a living. What kills me is the idiots who HAVE to go to college, graduate with +/- $200,000 in debt and have a degree in Comparative Literature. How the hell can they ever afford to move out of Mom’s basement when the only job they can get is working at Starbucks?

And I’m not sure but aren’t tattoos expensive? Looks like you’ve got ten grand worth of skulls on your arm there, Sweetheart. How is the house down payment savings coming along?

Damn, I sound like a frigging grouch.
Yes Grumpy. I have had clients that started over the stress of having a 30 something spawn living In the basement. It’s worse when the parents disagree. One wanted to sell their home and get a smaller place. Geez, find your spine and tell the parasite to grow up and get out. Well, of course I didn’t say that, but I wanted to.

Wow.

Whatta steaming pile of crap this thread turned into. Phew.

Maybe you can all drone out 300 posts on “which is better, 40 or 60 watt light bulbs”

Holy crap.

and yes Paul... we get it. You work in a medical office. Jesus, you’d think the guy was the Pope or something. “Oh today’s day ends in ‘y’?? Time for me to tell everyone I work in medicine and then give them a run down of my day! They’ll be riveted!”
