It's called sea smoke. It's formed when really cold air moves over 'relatively' warm water. It's like the inverse of fog.

Coldest day of my life was coming around the tip of Cape Cod one February with sea smoke like that and 25 foot seas abeam making the ship roll to about 40* with every wave. The spray was freezing solid on the superstructure and by the time we crossed the bay and entered the harbor the ice was three feet thick.
 
I keep my house thermostat at 64*F so I can ferment my ales. It makes the wife mad, but the beer is good. That's right, my fermentation chamber is my entire frikkin house. Take that cape. No need to your fancy jacketed conicals here! :eek:
 
We used to have issues all the time at the old house, but thankfully nothing ever burst. When it was built, they hadn't quite figured out not to put all the water pipes in the exterior walls.
