Does anyone know if the bottle conditioning phase produces an exothermic reaction?

If so I wonder if it's better to store bottles in the "open" while conditioning rather than boxing them up in a closet or similar location.

If it is exothermic, it is so small a temp difference as to mean anything. And even if it was, in bottle carbing/conditioning, warm is good. You'll find that most of us have been shoving out bottles in a closet for years with no issues. So there's really no need to worry about it.

Very, very slightly so. Bulk fermentation, which is a much larger event, will only raise the fermentor temp 5-10 degrees above ambient. There's no cause for worry about heat from the bottle conditioning damaging your beer in any way.
