To help me make a decision I need input from you guys (and gals - if you have seen this first hand, so to speak).

I have no need to father more children. I am contemplating getting 'the snip'. Just wanted to gauge the aftermath of the doc.

There is some residual soreness but in my case it wasn't all that severe. I was sore for awhile and then it passed with no adverse effects. In my case it was well worth doing. The whole procreation thing becomes a non-issue and you can play risk free with the missus. The worst part was the actual procedure. It's like getting your boys slowly squeezed.

I heard they load you up on valium... that would be cool, but not sure it would be enough. I'm afraid I just can't have it done, but the wife might make me later on.

I voted "Ralph Nader" on account that I won't need to get it done. I'm broken . We had to go through In-Vitro fertilization to have our child and with six embyos on ice, we have three more chances for another kid. If things were different though, I wouldn't hesitate to get it done.

I am still in the recovery stage (from snip last Thursday). I honestly was expecting little to no effect given what everyone else had told me. I am still having soreness and discomfort - sleeping on my back, or on my sides with a pillow between my legs.. squeezing bad bad idea. I think in the end it'll be well worth it.

The actual procedure wasn't bad at all. Some discomfort, but I was able to walk out without any problem (still numbed up). 2 hours later I was in bad bad pain for about 4-5 hours before I was just so tired, and the vicodin finally started doing something after the second dose.

I had it done - wasn't a big deal. Just do what the doc says and take it easy for the better part of the week. I was advised to use a bag of frozen peas to keep things cool - worked like a champ!!

I've got no reason to get it done at this point. I don't want any more kids and the wife had her tubes tied when the twins were born. She initially wanted me to get fixed but decided to get it done "while they were in there".

My ex had it done after I had a blood clot in my lung and then brain after being on birth control pills. (I was around 32 years old at the time). He had no problems at all and it was relatively inexpensive. He had it done on a Thursday and took it easy all weekend and went back to work on MOnday.

The best part was the "freedom" that we had from birth control after that. No, "wait a minute, I have to go find something" in the middle of the fun.

Hey Fingers....After seeing Sicko, and having a Canadian philosophy proffessor talk about it I've been thinking about universal healthcare....

How does something like this get treated up there? It's not a real medical necessity so do you have to pay for it? Is is subsidised?

Oh, and well, as for me. I'm 21 so it'll be a while before I'd do anything like this but I'd be down. My fiance is on birth control but it's not something you want to stay on forever....like Yooper was saying.

If there was a birth control pill for men I'd take it.

Well now, that was a dozen or so years ago and I think I've since destroyed and replaced all those brain cells, but it must have been subsidized. I did have to pay some trivial amount, around $50 to $80 I think, because it is elective surgery. Normally we pay nothing for doctor's visits.

I haven't seen Sicko, but the real big deal about our health care is that it provides for everyone, which is wonderful, but there are still some drawbacks. For instance, it is illegal to open a private clinic to treat people who can afford to pay. If you need a hip replacement, you wait or you go to the U.S. Another drawback is that the system is expensive. It would be cheaper for people like me to buy the insurance instead of paying the high taxes to support the system. Of course this would leave the poor without care.

There are some other issues as well and I don't want to hijack the thread with them, but all in all we Canadians really value our system. We don't want to see anyone impoverished or go without care when they get sick. Damn socialists!

No, honestly I had it done on a Friday and we left for camping right from the Urologist's office. I spent the weekend in my camping chair with a cold BMC between my legs, a lukewarm BMC in my hand, and it was SWMBO's job to keep them rotated all weekend. Went back to work on Monday- no problems.


I realy did smell smoke though, when he cauterized(sp?) it. Kinda freaked me out for a moment, but I got over it. All in all. it's no big deal, ans SWMBO will be able to get off the hormones.

Like others have said, follow the doc's advice. I took it REALLY easy for the first couple of days. As in, I didn't get off the couch for anything other than calls of nature. Not that I was in pain or anything, but just as a general precaution. Didn't do anything too stressful for a week or two. Then things were pretty much back to normal. The surgery itself was fine. A couple of moments of fairly intense discomfort, and two very brief spikes of pain when the doc injected the local anesthetic. The most difficult part was trying to stay relaxed during the process. (Definitely not the time you want to be clenching unexpectedly!)

For me, the worst part was the shot. The doc has to find and hold the vas and sticks the needle right in it. I thought I was going to throw up! Recovery wasn't bad. Sit on your ass for a few days and have SWMBO keep your glass of homebrew full. That's the least she can do!

Planning on it in the near future. Several friends and my dad have had it done. All said the same thing. Take it easy for a few days and you should be fine. All of em agreed that the smoke was the worst part. and the hot nurse in there watching.

My experience was twenty years ago and was done with micro-incisions. A little tender for a week, but no problems overall. Didn't have trouble walking, no scars, no post-op bleeding, etc. I think the worst moment was when the nurse tried to move a 500 watt spotlight with her elbow! I just grabbed the base and re-positioned it.

[No performance hit, either. In fact, it was probably a plus.]
