I'm all ready to order my kegs, but there are SO many types of taps.......American style, type S, type M, type Z, Q and the rest.

What's the difference or is there any that works better for ball-type Corny kegs? Or do I even need one......I have not seen a Corny "in action."

It depends on what brand of commercial beer you want to tap. This link will help you pick one based on your beer.

Picking a Keg Coupler

Now, for Cornelius Kegs, you either have a ball lock or pin lock system. These connectors are for a ball lock system.

i can't recommend enough using flared connectors instead of the barbed. much easier for cleaning, chaning out if needed, if you get pin-lock as well as ball-lock, need a longer line, changing taps, etc.
