Today I'll be using a starter for the 1st time. Last night I made a starter with 4.75 cups of water and 4oz. of extract (1.040 OG). I plan to pitch the entire thing.

I'll be boiling about 4.5 gallons of wort, and using cooled boiled water to top off.

My question is how will the starter affect my OG compared to not using a starter? Should I take my OG after I've topped off and added my starter, or after I've topped off and before I added my starter?

My gut tells me after I've topped off and added my starter, but since the starter's gravity will be close to terminal gravity I'm not sure if that's the way to do it.
