WTH? SWMBO doesn't like IPAs. Everybody loves IPAs don't they? IDK how to deal with this...that's just lame!

IDK how to deal with this...

Do what I did.... I kept making a pale that she liked, but upped the bittering just a bit each time. About a year later, she was drinking IPA and liked it! She now knows what I did and is cool with it and even drinks IPA's sometimes when we're out.

My girl doesn't like IPAs. What's worse is that she thinks my breath stinks for days when I have them so I can't get close to her.

Scary thing is that I've tried to sneak one once and not tell. She knew right away. :(

Anyone have that problem?

My wife was an avowed anti-hopster when I started brewing. I did what JonW did but not intentionally. I did an occasional PA mixed in with everything else (from lagers to stouts). She slowly graduated from the light lagers to the PAs and then hoppier PAs, etc, etc. Now she's a bigger hophead than I. She's only happy with DIPAs. Careful what you wish for. Now I have to brew a DIPA every other brew to keep her happy :)

The best thing about craft beers and homebrew is that she doesn't have to like them. There is bound to be a different style that suits her tastes better.

Be a good sport about it and brew something else she will like.

That way you have an IPA you like, she has something else she likes, and everyone is happy.

I didn't like IPA's when I started this journey either. Can you imagine such a thing???! Oh, the hoppanity! But my wife seemed to like every ale i brewed, some more than others, true. But she eventually liked a hoppy pale ale, moreso than even a session IPA, which she would drink. Especially when I explained what hops gave all those different fruit flavors & what yeasts did what to that. albeit briefly. Another angle to pursue?...

If she's worth keeping around, then every once in a while, brew something that she likes. Mine likes my Irish Reds, Oktoberfest and Vienna lagers, and the good ol' Blue Moon clone. Leaves about 10 other varieties she's not fond of...................
I just make sure there's always a couple bottles of her preferred styles available.

I'm a new Brewer but from day 1 I would make sure I brewed a wife-friendly beer in the rotation. Much easier to spend $$ when she likes the outcome.

She was really happy when I bought a fridge for temp control since she likes Pils. Yeah, I did it all for you, honey!

It's all in the presentation.

my wife likes dark beers mostly and announced to me that she thinks she likes beer more than wine now. (her friends couldn't believe she ordered dark beer on a girls night out) they thought dark beer would be too bitter.. she explained its the opposite

No problem. Just brew IPAs and drink them. If she wants beer, let her buy what she likes. Man, I wish my wife didn't like IPAs.

As mentioned previously in the thread, brew her preffered style in rotation. Perhaps buy her a pet [emoji217] as well.

Once she gets older she (and you) will appreciate the additional estrogens.

Just get some nice lingerie to wear in front of her.

Why is this a problem? Make more small batches that you can handle by yourself, with the stuff you get for small batches occasionally brew a beer she likes, and appreciate that she wont have a beer gut (or as much of one).

I don't really care for hop monsters either. I can handle a moderately hoppy wheat beer or pilsner, but besides that I'll take a bock or kolsch any day.

I, too, feel that everyone should enjoy at least a little lupulin in their diet, but my better half hasn't seen the light yet. God help me, I haven't exactly been a saint with this knowledge.

"I thought you said this one wouldn't be so bitter?!?!"
"Is it? Sorry baby, I'll make the next batch less bitter..." (tee-hee)

:D:D:D
hahahaha I love it. A thread started as a complete mockery turns into people actually discussing what to do with your SWMBO-IPA problem. This forum is just great.

:D I brought SWMBO home a six pack of her favorite brew (BMC) but she was MIA...WTF? She was at an AA meeting at the YMCA. IDK why? It's just LAME! :D

All of us craft beer snobs should start a BMCA at the YMCA! Your SWMBO could be one of the first participants. First level is appreciating an ESB. Second level is BPA (British). Third APA. Next BIPA (British). Then ECAIPA. BIPA (black), RIPA (red), BIPA (brown), and WIPA (white) after that. Followed of course by WCAIPA. Graduating from there brings you to BIPA (Belgian).
This will get you through the program. In order to become a sponsor, you have to pass the DIPA test. To become a master, it's the TIPA test. And to become a grand master you have to drink Billyklubb's DFIPA.
