Hi everyone!

I have some questions that I could not get a clear answer on the forum. Please see attached recipe. I am going to brew in the bag and I try to calculate strike volume (incl. grain water absorption, boil off, sparge, etc all in).

The recipe has already given the pre-boil volume so the the mash water/grain would be 1.8??

What would my strike volume be?

Thanks for your answers.

Your total water volume needed will be preboil volume minus grain absoption. With 14.75 lb of grain my guess is you'll lose about a gallon to absorption if you squeeze the bag. Jamil's recipes assume a 1 gallon boil off and 6 gallon post boil volume, so if your boil off is different then you need to adjust your pre-boil volume.
If you're doing full volume/no sparge BIAB you mash with all the water. Depending on the size of your pot you may not be able to, so in that case mash with some smaller volume then sparge with the rest. I can't quite fit my BIAB recipes at full volume without making a mess, so I will mash with about 2/3 and then dunk sparge the other 1/3 in a separate pot - but these are smaller batches so you'll have to tailor your plan to your equipment.

Check out this link. It is the easiest BIAB water calculator out there.

BIAB has nothing to do with water to grain ratios. BIAB actually ignores that. Here is the standard formula for figuring out your starting water volume.

absorption + boil off + trub loss + desired batch size = water needed.

For more info check out the BIAB forum stickies.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I am at the last stage and I believed that i did pretty good for the first batch. I had the 1.062 OG gravity which is so close but I measured FG today, after 2 weeks, and it was 1.007 so where is the problem? What did I do wrong? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
