I am an extract brewer. I bought a Pur water filter for my brewing and drinking water. It's only 3 weeks old and it is getting slow already. Getting 6+ gal. of water for my 1st brew was not bad but I could see that the next time it will take up a lot of time. How important is filtering water for extract brewing? Any thoughts?

I also have an RO/DI filter for my saltwater aquarium but have no intention of using that for brewing water, although I may use it for Star San water, separate issue. I decided to test my tap water and Pur filtered water with my tds meter. My RO/DI comes up at 0ppm, I have tested this several times. My NYC tap water comes in at 36, sounds about right from what I have read. But the Pur filtered water came in at 40! What the bleep?!? This is a 3 week old cartridge and, other than my 1 brewing session, I am now running a lot of water through it. Does this make any sense?

I'm more concerned about appropriate water for brewing but the tds readings make no sense to me.

If you are using the blue colored filter cartridge(3 stage) -the third stage is a mineral block that the water passes thru to give it a "spring water" taste.
The white(2 stage) cartridges don't have the mineral addition. The minerals are probably why you are getting strange tds readings.
