So, in Croatia, I am unable to find very large airtight containers for storing grain. I can find all sorts of stuff for storing clothes. But for an airtight seal, not so much.

That is, except I finally did find some.

People here make their own sauer kraut and wine. And the season for that is approaching, so more of these plastic fermenters have been showing up at stores. Found a nice 60 liter one today for $20. Not so bad. It has a screw on lid and is airtight.

I bought two 25 kg bags of grain. They haven't been opened yet. I'll be brewing around August 14th or something and one will be opened then.

Am I better off leaving the grain in its own bag, or cutting that bag and dumping it into this plastic fermenter? The bag itself will not quite fit into the hole for the container but I think the grain should fit if the bag is poured into it.

Along those lines, anybody know how many liters in volume a 25 kg bag of grain requires?

We have extremely humid weather here. Never had much concern before, but here, it's a different beast altogether.

Thoughts?

I've noticed that 11lbs. of grain fits into about 3gals of a 5gal bucket.Along those lines a 55lb. bag of grain would fit into a 60liter bucket.
I would wait till brew day then open the bag,get out what I needed and put the rest in the 60L bucket. If you have any that won't fit then put it in several large ziplock bags or plastic trash bags and tie off.
I would also put the unopened bag(leave in the original) into a trash bag and tie off to keep out the humidity.
Personally I keep all my grains in a large spacebag which allows you to vaccum out the air--probly don't have them there huh?

Ah thanks. Didn't see your reply.

We have those vacuum bags for storing blankets and such. But I think the fermenter should do the trick. It's airtight. The bag it came in is not airtight, IMHO, as I can smell the grain through it.

We'll see in a moment. Think I'm gonna go dump it in there and if it fits fine, order one more for the other bag. It's a very sturdy fermenter. I'll put a picture up later.

I think it's a great grain container. 25 kg fit easily.

Here it is:

BTW, that area where one *would* put a spigot is not actually drilled. So even better. It comes with a spigot and you're supposed to drill it yourself.

I would hold off on opening the bag untill you brew.

btw, Zagreb is an awsome place! One of the nicest cities I've ever been to.

Thanks for the reply. Already opened it. This container, to me, seems much, much more airtight than the bag, so went ahead.

Glad you liked Zagreb. I like living here. It's not the greatest place or anything but I like it.
