As my son in law was picking up a carboy this weekend to shake it, the stopper that had a habit of backing out was loose and he put his palm on it to go for a tighter fit. POP! It went into the carboy. Lost another that way later.

Question - are there stoppers and fermentation locks that fit well in a 6.5 gal carboy (almost lost a fermentation lock too)? And how can I get these out of there later?

Thanks, I have just ordered a dozen.

Any suggestions on getting those bad boys out of there now???

Meh, not a fan of the caps. I just use the "lipped" bungs, which have a lip around the top specifically for this reason.

This. It's called a Universal Stopper. Can be found at any of the major online homebrew stores. Can be bought either with a hole or solid. Looks like this:

I use these and couldn't be happier. I've never used carboy caps, so I can't comment on them.

Curious what you don't like about them.

Really easy to pop on and off.
With a rubber band around the undercut, they never leak.
And the double hole makes it easy to transfer with CO2.

i bought one of those before thinking it was going to be a nice silicone or something. i was disappointed when it was hard and plastic-y and rough on the inside. ive never used it due to the roughness possibly harboring bacteria. i also had doubts about the roughness interfereing with the seal around the rim of the glass.

i also left it in a soloution of starsan for a few days and the soloution turned cloudy and the cap had a thick, oily slime on it that didnt really rinse off.

$2.99 in the trash. il keep my universal rubber stoppers, as pictured above.

I use these now on my secondary carboys after the other kind would get stuck in the necks. I never had one go all the way in, but it was too close for comfort.

These so far have worked great.
