These stick-ons for the carboy, they don't like to be submerged in water for a long time, do they?

I had my primary in a tub to soften the temp swings while I was gone. The thermometer was submerged in water and all the temp sensor pads are now white :(

All items based on liquid crystals are subject to water damage, though I'm a little surprised the manufacturer didn't make more of an effort to protect the pads. Maybe they will recover when it drys out.

Never noticed that before. Of course I don't submerge mine either.

Good observation. Let us know if they "work" again when the temp changes.

It has been dry for 2 days now and is still white. I guess that this one is gone.

Looking at catalogs there seem to be two brands of stick on thermometers.
One is vertical and one is horizontal (if you put them on normally that is :) ).
The vertical one has degrees F and C, the horizontal one has
bars that say "Lager", "Ale" as well (got that from squinting at catalogs).

Which one did you have that went all white?
I have the vertical one (from LD Carlsen) -- after just a few rinses
in bleach sanitizer I can barely read it. I use a flashlight to read it.

Can anyone comment -- is the horizontal brand better?
Right now, I would not recommend the vertical brand.

Thanks

I have both and have not had any problems with either one.

Is there a reason why you have to let your bucket sit in water foa any length of time? I only sanitize the inside :D using a sanitizer soak.

I wash the outside with sanitizer and a sponge and have put it under running water, but I've never soaked mine. Hmmm?

I don't soak mine either, but the stick on gets wet during the bleach rinse off
in the tub. I was curious, since I only have one stick on so far,
if they are all like that or I got a bad one.
I guess I won't give up on them yet...

I put clear packing tape over mine (put it on carefully and tight no air bubbles) Then run a tiny bead of rubber cement (I applied it with a toothpick) around the edges of the tape and it will water proof the thermometer and I have seen no bad effects on its accuracy.
