I steeped for first time over the weekend. The specialty gains bag was very full and tight. Like a big softball. The recipe (kit) called to steep the flaked maize (1lb.) and other grains (couple oz) for about 20min. The little bag they sent was very FULL.

Is it normal to have the steep bag so full?

No. You want the grains to be very loose in the bag, even using two or three bags if needed. A clean pair of nylons works great in a pinch as an extra grainbag! Or a threadbare pillowcase.

If they were tightly packed in a ball, you probably got very little out of them. They need to be fluid in the water.
