Brand new home brewer. Looking to make my second batch the smashing pumpkin ale extraxt kit from northern brewer. What's everyone's thoughts on using starter Yeast? Seems like a regular thing to do for most , but needed some guidance if it was necessary/recommended for a pumpkin ale. Thanks!

Whether or not a starter is needed depends upon if you are using dry yeast or liquid yeast and the estimated original gravity of the beer. It is especially important how old the liquid yeast is, if you are using liquid yeast.

Liquid yeast loses viability faster than dry yeast. A good pitch rate/starter calculator will help.

It's a mild OG beer - just made it yesterday and even added 2 pounds of 6-row and 2 pounds of canned pumpkin to their steeping grains for a mini mash. Watch the video they post with the beer to see this. I've brewed this a few times and one packet of 05 will be plenty. If you go liquid, it's always best to make a starter, but given the mild OG of 1.054 you can make a quality brew without one. It's just best practice to make one. Enjoy the brew - it's a great seasonal pint!
