Coil is optional with spike

coil or homemade jacket can be added to any conical as well as the coolzone jackets.. I believe the ss brewtech conicals were the first home brewing conicals to be sold with the optional cooling coil.

I use a blue discharge hose wrapped around my conicals for cooling works great and is cheap and easy to clean but its more for the function over looks folks..

You can expect very similar results between a glycol chiller through coils and a conical sitting in a fridge with a temp controller. I have two 1/2 bbl conicals one is glycol
And one is in a commercial fridge with a small heater and a ranco two stage controller.

My hunch is the fridge is a bit more cost efficient as the fridge runs far less than the chiller.

I think it's a matter of cost and your available space. A chiller and a conical fit in a smaller footprint but probably cost more unless you can find a used fridge cheap.
I have a small glass door fridge as well as a glycol chiller setup for 3 conicals and I do not share your experiences with the chiller running more than the fridge with my conicals insulated. When I first had my coolzone jacket on one conical without insulation my chiller ran quite a bit but of course that was to be expected because the conical was not insulated.

chillers can be made fairly cheaply with window ac units or dehumidifiers too.
