I use a 24" stainless whisk in my M&B. Love it. Forget the spoon and go with a whisk. I got mine off Amazon for around $10 with free shipping.
I used to use a spoon with my old stove top setup, but switched to a whisk after being burned by wort reflecting off the spoon while stirring during the boil. It was the worst brew day I've had to date. I had a nice vigorous boil going, dropped in a hop addition and went to stir the pot. Just as the spoon touched the surface, a huge bubble of wort hit the bowl of the spoon and sent boiling hot wort straight at me. Hit me square in the chest and on the feet. Stripped off my shirt, socks and shoes as fast as I could to get the heat of my skin and reduce the severity of the burns. Then looked up just in time to see the pot start to boil over. So not only did I get some nice burns, but also had a huge mess to clean up. I'll never use a spoon to Brew again.
Cheers!
