Speidel Weldless Thermometer mod

Hey Guys,

Looking at ways to monitor the temp inside my Speidel tanks so I was think of the following:

1. A weldless thermowell with a remote probe

or

2. http://morebeer.com/products/stainless-weldless-thermometer-6.html

Which do you think is the best route. I have no problem drilling the 1" hole in the side of the tank for these, but I am more worried about leaks.

What do you think?

I have two 30L Speidels outfitted with thermowells. I bought two from Brewershardware.com and a couple of small drilled stoppers from my LHBS. I used a step bit to drill a hole in the orange top piece of the two piece top. The hole is snug to the stopper which holds the thermowell snugly.

It has worked very well for many ferments. I would never drill into the side wall of the vessel.

Any particular reason you would not drill the side of the fermentation vessel? Its pretty sturdy plastic, and the weldless kit, with a gasket on each side will seal pretty tight.

Thermowell through the top, and you're above the liquid level.

The bigger question is why would you? What do you gain by this over just drilling in the lid and putting a thermowell in? You can get a thermowell for like $12 from Brewershardware.

Worst case drilling in the lid if you somehow break it, you buy a new lid.

Buy the one that is long enough to get into the center of your wort when its full with 5 gallons. Buy a #7 stopper or something, drill a hole in the lid of the right size, shove the thermowell into the drilled stopper hole and the entire thing into your new hole in your lid..done.

Your just asking for problems drilling holes for weldless fittings in a fermenter, your just going to end up ruining it and or leaks for no reason.

I went to the top because it is much more forgiving. If I decided to not use the thermowell I can just insert a stopper. It would be no big deal to change hole sizes or just buy a new lid if I went in a different direction.

The two biggest reasons are: 1) NO CHANCE OF A LEAK EVER; 2) it works.
