"Another idea I had was taking pre-orders for yeast,specialty malts, and what ever else as well. If the pick up for the grain is near BYOB I could see some of you guys stopping in to pick up a few things. Now I have never been to a pick up but I assume about 40-50 guys show up. If 40 people all came to my store looking for 1056 or saf 05 at the same time, we would both be screwed. Again I am open to suggestions here."
I think that's a great idea... and could be a win/win for everyone if you are able to pick up specialty grains at bulk prices as opposed to the pre-packaged 1 lb retail packages. personally i don't care if I get my grain in a brown paper bag or a distributors 1lb retail package as long as it's what I want or need. I have picked up full bags of specialty grains at bulk buys and even though they are grains that I use regularly in my recipes, the quantities are seldom more than 10%... so a year or two down the road I still have 30# from 55# bag of Belgian Aromatic- not smart. On the other hand I often use acidulated malt as 2% of my grain bill, so every 2nd or 3d brew I'm shlepping to my LHBS for another 1 LB bag.... a PITA for sure.
A good portion of the group buys are folks looking to split a bag of specialty grain or special base malt and do not get them because they can't hook up with another person or two to make their 1/2 or 1/3 split. That may be an opportunity for you to pick up specialty grain for your shop at bulk prices.
The other thing that comes to mind is bulk hops. A few buys back there was a group hop buy. I picked up 4 or 5 varieties of hops in 1 lb quantities and still have some czech saaz from that buy...again not smart but I couldn't resist the deep discounts. I don't know if bulk hops buys are available (ask Jeff), but if they are, a 'seal-a-meal' vacuum bagger would allow you to take advantage of bulk hop pricing, break them down into medium size packages ( 8 oz for instance), sell lots of hops and maybe even pass on some savings to your patrons.
Just a few ideas related to bulk buying that could work to improve your bottom line also.

I have only taken part in 2 of the Group buys as I was just starting to get into all-grain before this price increase/only sell to LHBS thing. I started thinking is it worth it! I have a bit of a drive to get to the South Jersey pickup location and with gas going up and all I was considering cutting back to only a few brews a year.
As many of you know it's some what of a $$$ investment to get started in all-grain due to the cost of the extra equipment. Now factor in the hefty price of grain from the homebrew store or even the online shops when you have to dump out a batch because you don't have your process down and you "F" up something up : DAM this hobby is getting expensive!!
But after thinking about it and reading all of the posts about how NCM is jacking up their prices I thought I would put in my 2 cents;
Sometimes its not just about getting the cheapest price. The group buys help you, (OK me at least), to get to know some of your fellow brewers in the area and to be able to put a face to the people that post on this form. You get to share tips and tricks, make some new friends, maybe even make a few trades with someone for some Home brews while you are there to pick up your grain
Anyone who has taken part in a group buy knows that it's more then just a way to keep your cost down and that is why so many of us are upset/pissed off about what is going on.
I want to thank Jeff, (Lordura), for taking the time and effort to call the GM from North Country Malt and then to go as far as working out a deal with BYOB.
Brett It does not appear that you have a online store is that correct? If not It may be time to start considering one. I bet you have just gotten a bunch of new customers as I'm confident no one would have a issue placing a order with you at this point. Hats off to you as you are the first home brew shop that has made the effort, (or at least posted about it), to help out and not just sit back and think about how much more $$ you could suck out of your customers like some of the other shops are doing. Everything I ever learned about business is "rule #1" the customer is always right Take care of them and they will pay you back 10 fold. Looks Like BYOB is going to be getting a bit more business, Hell I know I'll make the effort to stop on down and order some grains from you even though I have a LHBS closer to me. I love the $1 a lb idea Hopefully this will truly be a win win for everyone and other shop owners will see what you are doing and offer similar discounts.

Can someone please clarify some things for me, please? The last group buy I was involved in was #22. Since then, I have had a kid, and brewed much less. However, i still brew, just not as much. I've diminished my supply, log on to HBT to find info on the next buy and this is what i see. So, is the plan of action to use the same pricing (http://www.countrymaltgroup.com/download.asp?f=f6 Password: CMGCHAMP) , plus $0.12 per pound, thanks to Brett from BYOB using his account?
If so, I'm down....because the NCM pricing for homebrewer group buys is horrendous. At $0.12/lb, it equates to an increase of $6.60 for a 55 pound sack of goodness.
Let's move forward people, it's still chump change. Everything goes up in price. Remember when gas was 80 cents a gallon?

I wanted to say thanks to everyone for showing some love. You guys have been calling, emailing, writting post, and popping in since Jeff and I started talking about the change in the buys. I have already had some guys start to inquire about Blichmann pots, ingredients and all types of other stuff. I appreciate all of it. You all seem like a cool group of guys. I look forward to meeting those of you I don't know in person soon. I recieved my application for a NCM account today and will be starting up round 37*-1 as soon as I can.

Just wanted to echo the thanks towards Jeff and Brett for setting this up.
I've been going to BYOB since I started brewing last fall and up until the 1 group buy I did, was getting all my ingredients there.
Can't wait till the 1st/37th Group Buy!!
Its so quiet now. No posts for several hours. Feels like the calm befor the storm.
I keep checking my email. Nothing. At 2 am, ill wake up for my nightly constitutional and check it again. I feel like a group buy junkie. I gotta get my fix man.

I was able to get into the last buy and I've been kicking myself that I didn't get in earlier. BYOB is a bit of a drive but the effort and support he is showing the local brewers is very impressive. I'll spend the money on tolls and gas, no problem. Thanks Jeff and Brett. Looking forward to more group buys in the future.
