Hello,

I'm new to home brewing but a relative of mine has been doing it for a few years now and has really got me interested in starting. We really like the idea of a sour apple beer but we cant decide the best way to do it. we cant do all-grain and we don't want to do a cider. We thought about using a sour ale recipe and adding apples but still don't know which sour ale would work better for a sour apple ale. does anyone know of any recipes or have any ideas?

Kettle sour a wheat ale or blonde ale. Maybe steep a little crystal malt if you want caramel flavor.
Neutral yeast. 5-10 IBU post-souring.

I'm not sure what you're thinking for adding apple flavor, but probably
1. fermenting on apple skins in secondary is what I would do.
2. You could add preservative-free apple juice to the beer, making "graff" or
3. you could just add apple flavoring. Brewers best and lorann oils both make good products.

One final thought: It would be a really good idea to start with a couple simple beers to become comfortable with brewing. Sour beer and fruit beer both require advanced methods.
First try a wheat or blonde without souring or adding fruit.

Cheers
