break it down. i'm past intoxicated. and am stumbling over the process. what's the top tier for? the middle is a mash tun and the bottom is the boiler right?

You pay out the nose for a bunch of equipment. You cry. You brew a few batches and quickly decide you need a bigger system. You cry. You sell what you have, take a loss and pay out the nose again. You cry. Oh wait, you said 3 TIER.

Seriously though, 3 tier is just a gravity fed system where the HLT is on top, the MLT is in the middle and the BK is on the bottom.

Top: Hot liquor tank on top. Holds/heats water of a specific temperature for mash or sparge etc.
Middle: Mash tun in the middle. For mashing and sparging grains with water from the HLT
Bottom: Boil kettle on the bottom. Takes wort from the mash tun.

Sometimes below that is the fermenting vessel. Gravity moves the liquid from the top to the bottom. (Except for getting water to the top in the first place.)
