Recently I have been paying $69.00 + $9.99 shipping for used pressurized soda kegs. It really sucks, but hey... it is worth every penny to me, as I really like the convenience. :)

Recently I happen upon an unpressurized keg for $20. I take the chance, get it and surprize.... it doesn't seal.

Further inspection shows that the opening appears to be mis-shaped, as I attempted to get it to seal with one of my good lids and it just leaks around it as well.

So I now have a useless soda keg, a pair of plyers, a hammer and a stubborn streak a mile long.

Thought I would consult the experts. Do I just bash it about until it conforms, or does anyone have a slightly less caveman approach that they could recommend?

Thanks, as always.

the metal remembers the shape its supposed to be it just needs some reminding. if you do go the hammer approach use small but firm taps.

I'm more concerned with why you are paying $80 for one used corney. I usually pay $25 to a friend who works for Pepsi (those ones need cleaned and new o-rings, but I get free disconnects and fittings), $35 at my LHBS(pressurized and ready to sanitize and fill), and bought a 4 pack from Northern Brewer with a gift cert I got for Christmas for $115.

Shipping tends to be the bigger issue for me on PEI.

I was looking at a AHS kit. $30.00 for the kit and $25.00 for the shipping. UPS manditory.

I was looking at a 4 pack of corney's from the USA. $100., but $150 for shipping. If any one keg has an issue... I am worse off then buying 'local' (Noble Grape in Halifax)

A single WineKitz is as close to a LHBS that can be found on the island. No grains, very limited spray malts, no hops, etc.

With $20.50 min for a 12 pack of commercial domestic brew (fixed LCBO pricing), it is surprising that there has not been a better way found..... Probably should start a local club and bulk order if nothing else.

I am lucky I think, $49 at the LBHS, granted it is expensive, but in the price range to be competitive. Where is a good place to order from and get the shipping cost down?

also, how much pressure were you putting on the keg when it was leaking? one keg I got for free NEEDS at least 10 psi or it won't seal. I just bump up the pressure on it above this, wiggle the top and then it seals up just fine.

The shipping to Canada is crazy. If you have anything sent by UPS FEDEX... you are paying for brokers fee. which is about $75.00 even if its for a free gift. Only way to send things across would be to use US postal.

if you see a dent on the lip of you keg. hold a piece of metal on the inside, hit it with a hammer.

when you seal it, hold the lid in place without locking it in. turn co2 on and wiggle it in place. I find my kegs leak if i just lock the lid first.

Definately try keg lube on the O-ring as well. I have had a few lids that leaked a bit. A little keg lube fixed that.
