So I'm kinda new to brewing and have done a few kits from NB but want to start branching out. I've read a bit about SMaSH and want to give it a try, but not for trying malts, but rather hops. I've brewed a bit and tasted alot of beers, but I want to really get a feel for what different hops add to the beer. I plan on keeping this simple and going extract.

I plan to use NB Maris Otter Malt Extract, unless someone has a better suggestion.

Before moving to NB kits I made a number of Mr. Beer kits and I have 2 of their 2.5 gallon kegs. Originally my plan was to make a 5 gallon batch and then split it up in the 2 and dry hop differently, but I decided to brew 2 separate beers with one hop each.

Gonna go for a 2.25 gallon batch so there is room.

3 lbs Maris Otter Malt Extract
.5 lb light DME

Hops
.5oz 60 min
.5 15 min
.25 5 min
.25 1 min
.5 dry hop 3 days

Safale S-04 yeast

BrewToad estimates
OG 1.056
FG 1.017
ABV 5.1%
IBU 77

Ill probably do this once for Mosiac and then once for another Hop. Let it ferment and then repeat until I get a feel for

Any suggestions? Improvements? Notes for this?

Also, how long will the fermentation take? Is there a way to approximate this?
 
I would suggest using a clean yeast like US-05 or WLP-001 etc. that way you let the hops shine through. Sounds like fun!

Thanks, yea I'll probably go with US-05 then.

Think I might cut some of the first addition out to lower the IBU. 77 is a little high probably.
 
The amount of time fermentation takes will depend on a lot of things, like temperature, wort oxygenation and yeast health, so that can only be guessed. I usually give it about a week, and then take a hydrometer reading to see if it's ready to go.

I'm currently doing an all-grain single hop test series to get a
feel for different hops. So far I've done citra, centennial and chinook, and have been very happy with them.
