I have to say, I have been most inspired with a few of the post about my fellow HBT builders. I have the chance to build a small brewpub in my back yard during this coming year. The idea came mainly from Layne's very impressive brew (HOUSE), as well as a few others. I thought that I would post a beginning to this adventure here. I would like some ideas from all of you. I am only going to be able to go about 10' x 20'. So space is limited. As much as I would like to, I wont be able to include a cold room. I think I will go with a Keezer instead. I will be including my brewing setup as well as 2 sinks a few small fridges, bar, and a few cabinets for storage. I would like to know if there is any other inclussions I may need. So, let me know.

There are so many variables, it would be hard for anyone to make comment without knowing more about what you have to work with and budget constraints.
Type of construction planned, available utilities, etc.

Well, construction (framing, plumbing, electric, insulation, and drywall) are taken care of. After that, I have 2-3K to work with for everything else. What I really would like to know from everyone here are the little extra goodies as well as the essentials.

The other questions are what do you want from the space? Obviously, you want to be able to brew in it, I assume that also means a bar to serve from. Do you want to have tables/couches? Do you want to be able throw a party for 10 in here? What you want to do with the space (other than brewing) will dictate what your design should be.... unless you're Layne and you just build it for every possible scenario :D

If you plan to brew in the space: electric, NG, or propane?
Do you have adequate ventilation for the brew rig?
I would suggest making as much of the space multi purpose as you can to conserve space, and plan built in adequate storage.

One think is for sure, I don't have 100k to throw at this "little" project. My wife would kill me, but oh a man can dream. Anyway, uses, right, brewing for sure, I do want to put a small bar it, maybe a small pub table and a few chairs. Im not looking to go to crazy with this. No couches, I don't think I would have enough room. 10 people may be a bit too many, 5 plus me behind the bar.

Heck yeah, storage is a must for me. Major clean freek. As for ventilation, I was planing on installing a fan and and a few windows because I could go either propane or NG.

Thanks for the questions guys, this is really helping so far.

What about a pool table, poker table, dart board or just a place to hang out and watch the game on TV?

Pool table would be awesome, but no. I was thinking I might get a big enough table to play some poker and what not, muli purpose. I have a dart board already for the room too. I was thinking about running my cable tv and internet out there too. I am wanting this to double as an HQ for my brew club, so that sort of stuff is in the plan for sure.

I like the idea of a multi purpose table: eat, poker, brewclub meeting, ect.
A tv for football games, and the dart board would round out the place nicely.

Thanks Layne, of course it isn't anywhere near the awesomeness you have reached with yours. Your encouragement is much appreciated.

I would make the room for a small walk in cooler. Just think, fermentation, grain storage, and beer on tap all in one small space! I'm doing mine 4'x 9'6", and my brew shed is 10 x 24.

shop sink? floor drain? bathroom? how much counter top space?

Yes on the sink. I plan on having a double sink by the bar and a large capacity sink by the brewing set up. No bathroom, as for countertop space, I will have a good size counter on both sides.

I do have the room to build up to 10'x24' and put in cold storage. I'm just not sure if I have it in the budget. I do like the idea, maybe I will just push back the start of the build and make sure I have enough funds set aside.

Build as big as you can afford (money, space, SWMBO allowance) you can always finish off sections as time and money allows. JMO.

You know, I have been a reader of this community for a while. I have yet to figure out what SWMBO stands for. I am sure it's very obvious but it escapes me.

I am working on a rough draft drawing of what I am think so far, including the cold room. I figure if I can fund it, I can build it, if not, I don't need to. Will post as soon as its done.

NICE!
I like the open layout. Everything has a place, and still room to move around.

That is what I would going for. I still need to get more exact measurements so that I can see if it will all truly fit. Also, I am working on views looking at the walls so that you can get a better idea of what it would look like if you were standing in the shop.

Well, the county I live in just shot down my plans. They didn't say no, but they throw all sorts of fees, and can't do's in. They want me to jump through hoops to build this thing. So, instead of building a shed, I am going to redo my garage. They can't say anything about that. The county can kiss my.... well you get the idea. So, the brewpub is still on for me, but now it will be a brewpub/garage. Drawing are in the works and will post them soon. Remember, don't let the big man keep you down.:ban::D
