I have read people saying they can get a boil in 10-15 minutes. Is that an exaggeration b/c is sounds great!

I don't know all the math behind heat and efficiency calculations, but a 5.5 degree per minute increase sounds pretty solid. I'd say that 10-15 minute boil figure is in regards to boiling from mash temps, not from ground water temps.

I guess I'll post this here as an additional question to the OP. My friend is going to be buying equipment this weekend and wants to know what a good solid burner would be to get from Home Depot. He's gotta $100 gift card so we kinda have our sights set on the 55,000 BTU Bayou Classic burner. Is that sufficient enough BTU to do 5-10 batch boils?

Yes.

I would go for this:

Bayou classic sp10

That's what we were thinking and I know adventures in home brewing website has good deals on 220000 BTU burners for less than 100 but we just wanted to utilize his gift card. I suggested a chest freezer but he's literally making his very first equipment purchases and before he can get beer to a chest freezer he needs a burner to get it there so I hope everyone understands our predicament. If its his 1st batch I suggest 5 gallons on the stove. I actually bought a freezer before a burner bc it is useful when not brewing. $100 could get 2 spare propane tanks?
