Sisal rope getting cut/chewed

This is the second year that the sisal ropes that I use for my hops are getting cut or chewed near the ground surface at night. Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you have porcupines in your area?

A short length (2 feet) of wire between the ground and the beginning of the rope would prevent the problem, if you do.
