Here’s one for you:

I bought a second hand DIY kegerator on eBay. Generally happy. Only problem is I can only fit one of my old-style (wider) corny style kegs in it at time - was hoping to get 2 in.

It’s pretty close though…I reckon it would fit it it wasn’t these needless shelf slots in the side plastic.

Is there a way to flatten/cut them out to squeeze in an inch or so of internal space? Appreciate any shred experiences here (best tools etc)

It's not the first or last hack job on a mini frig, I've done it too. It works.
Was looking for a testimonial out there from someone that’s already done this. There was nothing, so I guess this is now the official resource for such hatchet jobs 😆👍

I have no pictures to share, but have owned more than one with exposed insulation. Current one only has a small hole drilled for a bulkhead for a CO2 line.

Regular ball lock cornies probably would have fit without the hack job. Those converted pin locks are short and fat.
Right, that explains it. All mine are from the same place, and do seem to be fatter than your average corny. They’re “refurbished” but I didn’t realise they were also converted

Yeah, I wondered about that. Paint it, maybe? Otherwise I could gouge a bit more out and glue some padded reflective foam over it. Have some of that knocking around in the garage; give it a shiny finish 🙃
At the home improvement stores look for sealing tape for ducts. Not duct tape but it's a heavier tape like tin foil. Use that to cover your open wounds.

"Standard" traditional ball lock cornies are 8-1/2", pin-locks; 9", AEB & AMCYL strap-handled kegs are 8-5/8".
How many of these converted kegs do you have?
Maybe use an epoxy or some of that 'dip coating' (https://www.amazon.com/tool-handle-dip-coating/s?k=tool+handle+dip+coating) to cover it up and provide a nice thermal barrier.
