Ok,
So I'm just starting to get sick and my nose is crazy stuffed. I was cooking dinner and decided to have a Troegenator Doublebock, awesome if you've never had one. Then after not really being able to taste too much I decided to use some Afrin to clear my nose. I moved onto my Irish Red that came out way way better than ever expected, and is probably my favorite beer ever. The Afrin kicked in and now not only can I not smell anything...I can't TASTE anything either. This blows.

I just tried this. Totally weird feeling and took me a bit of adjustment so it wouldn't hit my throat. it did open up my sinuses for a bit (1/2 hour). I plan on trying it daily to see if it improves my overall respiratory health.

I have a neti pot that I use whenever I get a cold or my allergies try to take over. Took some getting used to, but now I love it.

Just don't do this...

I discovered the neti pot this year after co-workers were clamoring about it. There is nothing better other than maybe Advil Cold and Sinus.

I also heartily recommend chinese mustard on an eggroll for some instant clarification. The problem is it just doesn't last. I tried the neti pot today based on the incidental coincidence of my sinus problem and this here post.

Rats of to ya, beerfactory! I wasn't freaked out and it helped for a while. Now my test will be long term to see how I improve.

You'll need to do it at least once or twice a day.

I wouldn't recommend putting chinese mustard in the neti pot. :D

To anyone using a Neti - try a NeilMed kit. It works 100 times better than a Neti. I have used them for years for very serious sinus issues. It also helps with allergies. Everyone that I have convinced to finally try it has been astonished with the results.

What you need to do is take more cold meds and drink more beer. Eventually, you will be so relaxed that everything will just flow out. It would be best to do this while walking down a lonely dark country road flanked with ditches so that everything has a place to flow once you relax.

So evidently Afrin and some other medicines have a "rebound effect" where the initial symptoms return even stronger than before. I suffer from sinusitus and usually have it REALLY bad. So naturally, I used Afrin almost twice daily for years. I kicked the "junk", meaning Afrin, for about a year now and I'm so happy I did. Whenever I get stuffy I use the natural Netti Pot and I stay clear for weeks at a time now.

From a pilot's perspective, I always fly with a bottle of Afrin as a "get down" medicine. If a passenger or I (though I try not to fly with sinus issues) get an ear block Afrin will work well to open it up long enough to get down.
Nothing worse than an ear block you can't clear. I had a passenger who ruptured her eardrum because she couldn't equalize on a descent. The key is knowing that once you use it you can't keep using it. That rebound effect will make it more difficult the next time.

Oh and Holy Zombies! But it is your thread originally so I guess its ok. ;)

I regularly get sinus problems and have tried the neti thing and it was ok, but from what I hear, the best is to use it regularly and especially when you first get symptoms to help KEEP clear.

Hot foods do much the same thing with creating extra fluids to help flush out the thicker stuff, but don't relieve the swelling that is caused by infection.

Nothing worse than an ear block you can't clear.

One think I know of worse, SCUBA diving and being at about 30 feet, with ~500 lbs of air and a reverse block so you can't go up. Stuck it out going up and down until I hit lower than I wanted on the air, and had no choice but to head up. Luckily it cleared with the pressure, but I got real close to busting my ear drum. Now I make sure I'm nice and clear before diving
