SG - Are all extracts the same?

As far as starting gravity is concerned, do all extracts contribute the same amount of fermentable sugars to the wort? I am aware that DME is more concentrated than LME, but are all LMEs going to give you the same starting gravity?

Also, is there a basic formula you can use to determine the starting gravity using x pounds of LME/DME per gallon of beer?
 
Not all extracts are the same. Like anything made by humans there is some variation. Quality control will keep the variances to within workable tolerances for the brewer. Calculators also use different default values for estimations.

Here is a calculator for OG, and estimated FG. Actual FG can vary quite a bit because of all the variables in brewing techniques and measurements.

also SG stands for specific gravity. OG stands for original gravity. FG stands for final gravity. so SG does not mean starting gravity because you can measure the SG at any time.

to answer your question, each extract should hopefully list their PPG (which means gravity Points per Pound per Gallon). if they don't, i would imagine that you could find it on the product's website. if they don't, go with whatever beersmith says and you should be close enough.
