So I went to the LHBS today to get supplies for this weekends brew session and on my shopping list was yeast nutrient. I have been using Servomyces and I was just about out so I was looking to see what else they had. Next to the Servomyces was a couple different nutrients as well as one from White Labs - WLN1000. I talked to one of the guys from the LHBS and his recommendation was WLN1000 because he said it works as well as Servomyces and costs a lot less (I think it is like $12 for 6 capsules vs. $8 bucks for a tube of WLN1000 that should do about about 10 or 12 5 gallon batches.

When I got home I went to the White Labs site and read up on both products. It looks like the Servomyces may be a better yeast food because of the zinc it contains. So my questions are this - has anyone tried both products and have an opinion on which works better? Why? And if I added some zinc to the WLN1000 would it make up the difference?

Give your beer, mead, wine, or yeast culture an energy boost! Use 1/2 teaspoon per 5 gallons of beer. Store at 40-70F. Add to boil in last 5 min., or boil separately for 5 min. Shelf life is nine months from date of preparation on vial. White Labs Nutrient is comprised mostly of amino acids, which are building blocks for proteins. It doesn't speed up a fermentation much, but it does make for healthier yeast. It can be used with Servomyces.

WLN 1000 Use to increase health of yeast. Contains diammonium phosphate, essential vitamins and cofactors, nitrogen(ammino acids, proteins and peptides), and minerals. Effective boost for first and/or late generation slurry. Use 1 tsp for 5 gallons. Comes in 1 ounce unit
