I just realized that my bucket may be too big for a secondary. I have a pumpkin ale in the primary right now and want to move it to secondary to clear out all of the pumpkin. Unfortunately I only have my 6.5 gallon buckets.

1. Is the bucket too big to use...too much head space?

2. Should I just leave it sit longer in the primary before bottling?

Do you have the ability to flush the bucket with co2? Maybe from a co2 cartridge? If you can create a layer of co2 to sit on top of the beer then it won't be a problem at all. Otherwise it probably still isn't a huge deal, but it would be better to have the co2 layer. Any time you use a secondary you risk oxygenation. Never the less if you are bottling the bottle conditioning will use up the o2 during that process.
