Scottish ale for a bourbon barrel

A group of us are planning a big brew day to fill a 53 gallon bourbon barrel and I was looking for some suggestions for a relatively simple scotch ale recipe. I also wanted to know if it needs to be a big beer(>9%) or could it be modest(6-8%)? Also, how long would you recommend leaving it in the barrel? Thanks for any help.

Consider Drom John's Innis & Gunn Original without the chips and bourbon. If all-grain, then convert the LME to Golden Promise.
Chips are faster oaking than barrels. Innis & Gunn sits over bourbon infused hardwood for 77 days. Real I & G Original is 6.6% ABV.
