Hello faithful friends,

Today I am going to measure gravity of my fermenting brew, so obviously I need to sanitize my hydrometer tube (or just the hydrometer if I submerse it in the bucket). But this weekend I will be racking to secondary... Question is this: if I make a 5 gallon batch of Star San today, will it still be good on Saturday if covered, in order to use for my racking cane and siphon? If not am I wasting a whole batch of sanitizer by just using my hydrometer today?? Any answers and opinions will be very welcome. Even conflicting opinions. Need all the advice I can get!

Thanks to all,

Jackson

Yes. I make 5 gallons at a time and keep it for weeks. Usually if it turns cloudy then don't use it but also if the pH is below 3 then you're still good. From now until Saturday you should be fine.

I make up a gallon of Starsan at a time & keep it for weeks. Even if it gets cloudy, as long as the PH is below 3, it's fine. I have the same 8oz bottle of Starsan I bought over 4 years ago & it's still good in concentrated form. Solution lasts so long, I think it's a great value.

Buy some pH test strips. As long as the pH of the Starsan solution remains below 3.2 it is good to use. That is as long as the solution doesn't have obvious gunk in it. The solution may become cloudy, but that is usually just from minerals in the water. Shops that also carry wine making supplies will have a variety of test strips for different pH ranges.

Use distilled water when you are makin' a big batch like that, and it gives ya' some peace of mind when you open it up to use it,m and it's not cloudy.

Like the others have stated though, PH below 3, and you be good to go, cloudy or not.
