Here's a quick (and easy?) question:

I washed my bottles and put them in the dishwasher.... and then fell asleep and now I have to leave and won't have a chance to bottle my brew until tomorrow.

Can I leave the bottles in the (sealed) dishwasher until tomorrow and then bottle them out of there, or should I re-run the dishwasher tomorrow before bottling.

Also -- since the bottles are HOT out of the dishwasher, how long do you guys usually wait until after the cycle has finished to bottle the beer?

Thanks!

- Mark

Just to be on the safe side, I'd re-run the dishwasher.

After the machine is finished cycling, I leave the door closed for about twenty minutes before bottling. The bottles have cooled off enough to handle, yet are still warm and SANITIZED.

I don't use anything other than hot water. I run my dishwasher on the "heavy duty" cleaning cycle, and include the "hi-temp wash" and the "heat dry" in the cycle. When the machine is done, the bottles are HOT. Let them cool for 20-30 minutes INSIDE the dishwasher, and then begin bottling.

I also use the dishwasher to sanitize. I do not use soap, just run the heat cycle. I usually run the DW the night before, then bottle the next day. There have been times I have not bottled and left the bottles until the second day. I just used them as is. Still have not had any problems. RDWHAHB I guess. Maybe I'm living on the edge.:)

I'd re-run it before you bottle just because there can be left over food particles and crap in the dishwasher from previous use. I wouldn't want anything funky to get a head start before I bottled the beer.

Also, I'd just try the quick rinse with the heated dry. The heated dry in my experience has done enough in the way of killing everything off and the speed cycle saves you a bunch o' water.

..... and put your bottling bucket over the dishwasher. The open dishwasher door catches all the spills & you just close the door when you are done bottling.

I just sanitized a batch of bottles (inside) with StarSan and put them in the dishwasher. This makes sure anything is out of the inside and that it's sanitary in there to start. I will run the dishwasher tomorrow morning before I bottle. Some people would probably say that doing both steps is redundant, but it works OK for me.

+1 to that. I just sit next the open DW and pull the bottles. It is so simple. Takes hardly any time at all.

I usually fill it up with bottles in the morning on bottling day and run it when I leave for work, I might not get to bottling until I get home 10 hours later and I've never had a problem, plus they're usually dry by then!

I read that using a rinse agent like JetDry is no good for cleaning bottles as it destroys your head retention. I haven't put any in my dishwasher, but I've only been in this apartment for a couple of months and have no clue if the people before me added any, so there still might be some. How concerned should I be about washing my bottles in the dishwasher because of this?

Does your dishwasher have some large reservoir for that stuff? I can't imagine you'd have to worry about that.

It's a plain old GE dishwasher....just not sure how long a fill up of JetDry usually lasts...moved in at the beginning of August, so not sure if it's possible if there's still any in there.

Dishwashers with this label are guaranteed to result in success. Sani-Rinse.

I have washed them in the DW and left them. But then I usually also run the DW with a bunch of idophor when i run it.

I'm confused....you're NOT sanitizing with StarSan or anything prior to filling? Just washing the bottles in the dishwasher and filling immediately after?

I cant believe the bottles are sanitized this way...hmm, learn something new everyday!

This has been covered quite a bit in the past here. Many (me) have been doing this forever without issue. You need to know if your dishwasher has a true NSF sanitary rinse... otherwise, it may not be getting hot enough.

I run mine through the sanitary cycle and when they are done put a piece of foil on the top while they are still hot. Sometime later in the day or even the next day I bottle. That said, I'm switching to using the Vinator as the dishwasher overall is a pain.
