Background: I have been brewing with electric for 8 or 9 years - 30 gallon batches - on a 240 vac, 50 amp system. I added a "safe start" to my panel about 4 years ago. I am now downsizing my brewery to 10 gallons and building a 30 amp control panel.

I have dry fired and ruined several elements over the years but it was never at start up. It was always during the middle of a batch when switching from HLT to BK or vice versa. I have never been stopped from turning on my system by the safe start. On the other hand, float switches would have prevented all my ruined elements.

I am a lover of simple and effective - I abhor unnecessary complexity.

Do you think the safe start is a necessary feature or not?

I didn't use one in my build but absolutely love my flow switch for my rims, thinking of adding float switch to hlt and bk.
