What do you guys think, am I a complete moron for having just bottled with rusty bottle caps?

I didn't want to, but all the caps I had were rusty. Is this going to hose my beer?

pax,
Scott

yeah there is alot of crap that probably got into your beer. Ihad the same thing when I was bottling the other night, when I bottled a batch a few weeks prior I sanitized to many caps and then forgot about them and threw them in a plastic bag, when I bottled a few nights ago they were all full of rust, I had extra so I just threw them out

I've got some caps that I dried out (sanitized too many last time I bottled) and now they're all rusty. I'll probably soak them in oxyclean or PBW before I reuse them.

You'll probably end up with a metallic coppery-bloody taste in your brew. Sucks. Sorry dude.

how long ago did you do this? recap them and try and minimize the contamination, mabe it will mellow out if you didnt get much in there

this is why you should always have extra caps in sealed bags, especially if you only bottle.

i keg everything, with a scattered amount of bottling with the beergun, but i got in on a deal for 3,000 bottle caps, so i am now good for the rest of my brewing career most likely. i put the caps in a 5 gallon plastic pale with lid with rice inside to help as a dessicant.

caps are cheap enough to have a lot extra. just remember to keep the extra all dry, otherwise all of your bottle caps will become rusty.

I think you'll be OK and that a little bit of iron oxide on the lip of your bottles won't hurt. You aren't planning on storing them upside down where the beer and caps are in constant contact are you? :)

Seriously though the plastic liner on the caps should keep the metal from touching your beer. The metallic part of the cap holds it securely to the bottle and the plastic liner in the cap creates the seal. The metallic part of your cap and the beer are never in contact.

Just wipe off the mouth of your bottles when you open them.:mug:

I did exactly what OP did. I had done just about everything except for capping the bottles. I put the priming sugar in, waited for it to mix in, then distributed it to all the bottles. When i went back to cap them that's when I noticed and it was too late at night to go to the store. I think most of them are only rusty on the top as the bottoms are plastic (as abracadabra noted). I guess we'll see.

I see that this thread is ancient. How did everyone's beer turn out?
