Unbelievable drummer. Have to say, many nights Pacific oceanside with friends, the green dream or hash, and these boys. Passage to Bangkok is still one of my favorites, though there are really a million more. One of the first I could actually play decently.

RIP.

So sad to hear. I've been with them since the very first album. Seen them in concert 13 including their farewell tour in 2015. I'm not a drummer but play guitar (not at all too well) and they were all a huge influence in my musical life. 2112 blew me the frack away when it came out. The first album with the original drummer was simple heavy metal but when Neil took over on the 2nd album and beyond, his lyrical influence changed them for the better.
RIP Neil- and thanks for the musical memories!

With all of the tragedy in his life (his daughter and first wife died), its sad that he didn’t get more time to be with new child and wife. Rush’s music has always been powerful to me, and each time I listen I notice the another layer of sound that is their music.

I'm not surprised that some homebrewers dig Rush. Creative types, iconoclasts, intellectuals, happy misfits, alchemists... we are all of these and more among us.

Rush was a formative influence on me in high school, college, and my early 20s. I actually wrote my college application essay about Neil Peart and the concepts he addresses in "Limelight." Neil's words strike me at various moments to this day, now into advanced middle age. While my musical tastes are now very wide and much more mellow overall, Rush is part of my early soundtrack, and will be til the end.

I'm very sad to learn of Neil's passing. Spent some time texting with old friends from various periods in my life this evening, all of us spontaneously contacting each other, based on the shared history of bonding over Rush - Geddy, Alex, and Neil. Rest in Peace, Professor.

"Draw another goblet... from the cask of '43."

I'm not a Rush fan. So please believe me when I say that I'm sad. Neil Peart is one of my favorite all-time drummers. If it wasn't for his drumming and Geddy Lee's bass, I'd probably never listen to their music. Really a sad day for drummers, but I can say that he has positive impacted my musical experience.

Thank you Neil for your contribution to the musical arts!

If you haven't had the chance, check out the books that he has written whether it's the book or the audible version.

Im going to go on here a little. I mean how many times in your life have you heard or said, want to hear how its really done listen to Neil Peart. And pow you can see in people's eyes the wonder and enjoyment of Peart playing the drums so crisply. His music never aged in me. Its still right there like the first time I heard Tom Sawyer. I didnt realize he was aging too. Rip Neal thanks for the memories. Im starting to wonder if his music was the moment when I fell in love with music. I think it was.

Music has always been a huge part of my life, and Rush has always been at the forefront. Their melodies and lyrics speak to me in a way that no other artists ever did. I was only fortunate enough to see them live twice. The first time in highschool at the bands peak. The second show was on the R40 tour. I will always remember that show because I took my son, his first concert. The show was amazing and sharing it with my son is something I will always cherish.

Farewell to a king, Neil Peart, we will miss you.

Geez the memories I have growing up with this band. I'm ashamed I only got to see them once. It was during their Roll The Bones tour. Primus opened up for them. Holy crap was that an awesome show.

I love Rush. I've not been this sad since Chris Squire's passing in 2015.

When Geddy Lee stood in for Chris to play "Roundabout" during Yes's R&R Hall of Fame induction, that was a special moment for sure, especially for fans of both bands.

These days I listen to Rush when I run. I'm going to cycle through all of their albums over the next few weeks, in no particular order, to reflect on Neil's lyrics. Just listened to Counterparts today. Oddly, after decades of being a fan, I'll never listen to Rush the same way again now that Neil is gone.

This is a tough one to handle, not least because there was no mention of his illness; for most of us, the announcement yesterday was right out of the blue.

I don’t know anything about Rush, if you had to pick 3 songs to make me a fan... what would they be?

Still, I have known Peart’s name since I was young. Even I know he was a legend.

I was never a big fan of the music, but the lyrics are poetry.

I like the musicality of the song in the first post here, but the lyrics of the following are pretty good.

If you want to see how much Neil changed Rush, listen to the first album then listen to the second one. Besides the music being different, the lyrics stand out immensely. Who knows what would have happened had Rutsey stayed on as the drummer.

Agree with everything @Chorgey suggested and add to it La Villa Strangiato, Limelight, and take your pick from Far Cry, Subdivisions, Losing It, The Trees, or anything off the Permanent Waves album.

Totally agree. Maybe it's just me too, but that performance was pretty tight. I don't know if maybe Geddy is just more of a disciplined musician (not that Yes are a bunch of slackers) and the others were playing up to his level, but that's become one of my favorite performances of "Roundabout".

Totally agree about Permanent Waves. Probably my favorite album.

I think that album along with Moving Pictures and Signals would be what I recommend for first timers.

It's hard to pick just three songs.

It is impossible to pick just a few songs. Permanent Waves through Hold Your Fire ('80-'87) is my sweet spot, although I like everything before and almost everything after as well. I'm not a big fan of Presto, and I don't have the last two albums, but I suspect that will change.

Contrary to that line from the NYT article about the supposed dorkiness of being a Rush fan in the 1980s, at my high school most of the cool kids could be seen sporting Moving Pictures tour t-shirts. My first live performances on guitar on that high school stage included Vital Signs and Subdivisions. It was a long time ago, man...

"Nice" is an understatement. I discovered that posted over this past weekend - what a tribute. And I never would have expected the U.S. Army Band to work up an arrangement of a Rush tune! Really, really great.

Canadian Musician Jacob Moon does some amazing versions of Rush tunes too, but that Army one the other I could get used to some more of those.
