I need to get a Pale Ale knocked out next weekend, but I'll be brewing that in the next 3 weeks or so.

I agree, one of the best examples of a DIPA I've had. The bitterness was firm, but not tongue-strippingly bitter. The hop aroma is beyond intense. Citrus and tropical fruit. It's dry, but still very drinkable. I took one sip, and said: I'm going to brew this.

We flew to San Diego, so I couldn't bring any back with me. I'm driving out to OC this weekend, so I'm going to take home a bunch of this. I hear it's not going to be available in AZ until mid-July.

In terms of recipe formulation, it was pretty simple. It's a 95%/5% 2-row/C15 split. Ruination is bittered with CTZ and uses Centennial exclusively from there. 3.2oz is exactly 1lb/barrel in a 6gal batch. So all the hop additions are 1lb/barrel. The numbers all line up, and it looks right. Stone does a very long whirlpool addition with Ruination, so guessing the times for the flavor/aroma hops was tricky. I'm planning on a 30min and a 0min addition, with a 10 minute whirlpool post boil. We'll see. Too be honest, I don't think it's that critical. Throw 6.4oz of Centennial at the beer anywhere between 30minutes and flameout, and I bet it'll be hard to tell the difference on this recipe.

I almost forgot: From taking their tour, I know they use Great Western C15. Considering there's only one specialty malt, I might as well get it from the same maltster.

had it last night down here in Mexico. My local bar tender/business owner went to CA in order to take care of some business over there and took it from there all the way to SD. He was kind enough to share one with the co-owner, their best client & me (probably 6th or so best client, it helps to teach'em how to brew). We also shared an oaked arrogant bastard and i had the IPA for myself.

he was able to bring back only two cases (24 bottles), I bought a couple of bombers for $200 MXN each ($14 USD). Considering the plain ruination IPA goes for $112 MXN, i'm pretty happy with my purchase, i might have to buy a couple more.

the body and head retention on it is just insane. The aroma is freaking nuts and the flavor is to die for. I swear every burp you take after drinking it contains at the very least 1 hop pellet

Wow!! Doesn't taste like its a 10.8% beer...really!
The aroma is awesome!! Super aggressive hop profile..still could be bitter tho...
imo the one of the best beers on the market right now..
My liquor store sold out of these bombers in 2 days...glad the owner saves me beers for me (he loves my homebrew!! )
If you can grab one, grab two!! Soo worth it!!

Here's what we drank while in San Diego. It's amazing. I'll be buying more this weekend assuming I can get it.

That's what really struck me about it. It's a huge beer, but you don't realize it until you go to stand up. I managed to snag 4 of them and I don't think they're going to last long. I already loaded Scottland's recipe into Beersmith for a future brew date. Stone needs to seriously think about making this one a seasonal.

I sent Stone an email saying how good this one is and begging them to make it a seasonal. The response was as follows:

Hey Kevin,

Rarely do I say this, but I agree with EVERYTHING you said 100%. It’s a huge beer with incredible balance that drinks dangerously well…and I can’t get enough of it. I’m going to be heartbroken to see it go and it seem stop be disappearing fast. We actually sold 90 cases of Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA in five days here at the brewery, which was our total allotment. That means we’re out of it, which, in turn, means I’m pretty bummed.

I hope we make this one a seasonal too and I’ll continue to beg and plead on the behalf of Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA fans everywhere.

Thanks for writing us Kevin. I appreciate it.

Cheers!

So to everyone looking to try this (and people looking for more) better hurry up. I already checked all the places near me and they're sold out already.

Fingers crossed I'll find some this weekend. That beer was delicious. On the bright side, I'll be brewing my proposed clone in about 2 weeks, and with any luck it'll be on tap by by the beginning of August.

What's the target email address? I'll email'em every day in hopes they get nation wide distribution in mexico

1.013 to 1.014 was the gravity of the sample I degassed last night. That puts the OG around 1.096; this is a really flipping big beer.

This is a beautiful beer. I got schmammered on it by accident. 22oz of 10.8% beer sneaks up on you quick. I also hope they make it a seasonal as I'd drink a lot more of it!

Great point, but I find it hard to make a good clone. If anyone has a good recipe, i would love to try it out. But for me it's hard to justify making a clone of this as I can get a the freshest version 2L growler for $10 or so and 10 miles away.

I brewed Yoopers regular ruination clone and it's carbing now. Of course I had to sub the hops, but we'll see how it turns out. Anyone else make this recipe (Yooper's)?

Let us know on the Anniversary recipe!

Her recipe looks very close. I would personally tweak it as follows. Whether that would have any noticeable difference on the final beer, I don't know. You'd probably only notice a little more dry hop character from the extra dry hops. This is knowledge from brewer interviews, and from taking their tour. If you email them, they are very helpful.

14.5lbs 2-row (adjust based on your eff %)
12oz Great Western Crystal 15
Mash around 150*
1.6oz CTZ @ 90
1.6oz Centennial @ 30
1.6oz Centennial @ 0
3.2oz Centennial Dry Hopped.
WLP007 - Dry English Ale yeast.

That's exactly 2.5lbs/bbl of hops (what ruination has). It has 1lb/bbl of hops in the dry hop, and .5lb/bbl everywhere else. Those numbers make sense to me because it would be more what Stone would actually do. You'd also want to allow the flameout hops to steep hot for at least 15 minutes or so, as Stone would add those hops in the whirlpool.

That's what I do too. My flamout hops are added at flameout (duh) and aren't bagged. They cool slowly with the wort over 20 minutes. I don't bag any hops. Just cold-crashed for 48 hours and all hops had fallen...no need to have bagged them.

So my local bottle shop was limited to getting 3 cases of this brew. I bought 1 bottle to try, then figured I would determine how worthy of additional bottles I should buy. I went back and bought a case. Yesterday, I went back and bought the last 3 they had to ensure I had enough to store, as well as drink on my vacation.

I'm not sure how many have reviewed stones pages in recipe formulation but here is their page on the ruination 10th.

I'm off to the del mar international beer fest!

The brewery has a few scheduled growler fill days coming up over the next two months, I'll have to make the trip down for one of those.

Operation Ruination Procurement was a success this weekend. I bought five bottles from bevmo, as well as one of Jamil's Evil Cousin. Clone should get brewed this weekend or next.

Nice, I didn't think any bevmos still had any. I noticed that my local brewpub has a couple Heretic bottled beers, but I haven't tried any yet. Be sure to post the updates on the clone.

This is really an incredible beer, our Eureka burger blew through three kegs in a little over a week, I had one on a Wednesday, and came back the next Saturday, and it was still on the board, but empty. I found two bottles in a mexican market the next county over, then tried really searching for it, and when I did, only one shop had it, and was limiting customers to one bottle each, because it did not come through the distributor, but through someone else. They had said there was some ridiculously low amount of cases were issued in this county, along with the smoked porter w/vanilla and w/chipotle, and the dogfish victory collaboration from the stone issue, which this shop received only one case of each. I heard the same one-per-customer limit at Wine Warehouse in Los Angeles.
The Vanilla smoked porter was extremely interesting as well, it was strangely like a dry cream soda, with a nice oily, lingering mouthfeel.

There's still some Bevmos in socal that have some. You can check the inventory for each store on their website.

My bevmo's online inventory said "out of stock", went in, and they hadn't received it yet, and the status for the order was "active"

I've got two more bottles and I'm planning on getting a growler fill (maybe two, I should have my wife get one too) and beyond that I'll be trying out scottland's clone recipe and hoping Stone decides to make it a seasonal or regular release. It wouldn't be the first time, SSR started as the 11th Anniversary.

Enjoyed one of these last week- fantastic beer. Have to say I prefer it to the standard version, and am really glad I live in SD. This stuff is everywhere.
