Hey Folks,

I made my first mead, a batch of JAOM, earlier this week, no problem. Nice activity but nothing crazy.
Today I made a strawberry mead using old clover honey , K1-V1116 yeast rehydrated, 1 pound of strawberries that had been frozen, smashed, defrosted, and introduced, and 18 raisins.
Much more vigorous activity and 4 hours in, the bung and airlock were pushed off, and strawberries and foam were oozing slowly out of the top of the 1 gallon glass jug. Long story short, after 2 of those episodes, and then having it just overflow when I left the bung out, I decided to transfer it to a bucket.
Got everything set up, then when I went to lift and move the bucket, some of the Star San from the airlock flowed into the must.
Did I just see my batch get ruined?
Thanks.

Nope, the batch will be fine, you have nothing to worry about. However, it's for this reason that I fill my airlocks with 65% ABV distilled drinking booze, or something like the cheapest vodka you can find. If a drop makes it into the fermenter, it's not a train smash at all.

Off topic - raisins isn't nutrients for yeast. I would add nutrients to feed the yeast in any mead made, unless the recipe specifically calls for it not to be added. Feeding your little ones will keep them happier and you'll get a better mead sooner with less off flavours.

Thanks for the response. I thought the raisins were the nutrient, like in Joe's Ancient Orange Mead (at least that's what I thought they were for). I did buy some Wyeast Nutrient. I can put some in there. I see posts where people add them on a schedule. For a 1 gallon batch, do you have any recommendations for how much and when?

The JOAM is a specific recipe which doesn't call for nutrients - it's a special one. I prefer using the TOSNA 2.0 schedule when adding nutrients and it works like a charm. I've had mead drinkable straight out of the fermenter with patience and care before. Refer to here to see more: http://www.meadmaderight.com/tosna.html
