Numbers for the kit don't add up with what I have in my Hopville entry and I was wondering if anyone can confirm.

Ingredients:
2 lbs Briess CBW Brewers Gold Dry Malt Extract
3 lbs Briess CBW Amber Dry Malt Extract

Specialty Grains:
.5 lb Caramel Vienne Malt
.5 lb Caramel Wheat Malt
.5 lb Crystal Malt 60L

Bittering Hops:
1 oz Centennial Pellet

Hops Flavor Hops:
1 oz Crystal Pellet Hops

Aroma Hops:
1 oz Crystal Pellet Hops

Dry-Hops:
1 oz Crystal Pellet Hops

Here it is plugged into hopville: http://hopville.com/recipe/581690/american-ipa-recipes/brutal-bitter-ipa-kit

Versus what it's supposed to be:
OG= 1.060
FG= 1.013
IBU's= 60
ABV= 6.3%
Color= 12 SRM

Here's a source for the info: http://www.store.homebrew4less.com/...les-Beer-Ingredients-Kit/productinfo/BC10653/

Anyone know what's up?

I assume this is for a 5 gallon batch? Quickly plugging the figures into Beersmith gives me a OG of 1.045, so I'd agree that you're looking at a lower figure than the one quoted. I'm not sure how you could get a higher gravity out of that without doing a partial mash, which would require some base malt at least. I guess if you're missing something, so am I :).

Call the store, it sounds like the kit is missing 2lbs of extract. Also check if another store carries it and call them to confirm. 5lbs of extract isn't enough for 1.060ish 5gallon beer.

I'd agree that those ingredients won't give you an OG of 1.060.
Did the instructions call for adding a pound or so of sugar? That would bring the gravity up to about 1.060

-a.

Just make sure you have recorded your malt correctly about. I've never made a five gallon batch with less than six pounds of extract - often more.

Thanks everyone for the confirmation. Went to the homebrew shop and two gallons of extract put me right on target for 1.061.

Little disappointed with the hop flavor. I used 1.5 oz cent. and two ounces of crystal (1 at 15 and the other at flame out). I had another ounce for dry hopping but went ahead and purchased 2 more ounces.

This kit was a freebie to me and I'm brewing it tomorrow. When I looked at what's included and the target numbers they give you, I noticed right away that this wasn't going to add up. I also wanted to double this to a 10 gallon batch, so I bought the extra ingredients including additional extract to hit the advertised OG of 1.060.

I was interested to see your comments regarding the hop flavor/bitterness as I had my suspicions about that as well. Seems a bit on the light side for an IPA and for the numbers they suggest. I think I'm going to leave it as is and see what happens, but it's nice to know that your experience seems to have confirmed what I suspected would be the case.

There was almost no bitterness. It tasted like a stick of juicy fruit both when it entered and left primary. I went ahead and dry hopped it with 3 oz of Crystal (2 oz were my own additions).

I also brewed a half gallon batch with an ounce of Centennial. So I could blend in some bitterness in the bottling bucket. I just bottled this weekend and it turned out I didn't need to do that after all. I'm not sure if it was the additional hops or if it just needed to mellow out. I'm happy with the balance now.

And just to confirm my gravity readings did not change after primary. So it wasn't due to unfermented sugar.
