I have a friend who recycles computers. They just got a bunch of refrigerators along with an office full of computers. They will sell any of the refrigerators or freezers for $20. I was considering getting a freezer and 2 refrigerators. BUT all of them have had their refrigerant removed because they were going to be scrapped. All of them take R134a. I will have to add refrigerant to all of them and wondered if it was worth the trouble. The three I am looking at are all full size and seem to be in excellent condition. When I plugged them in all the lights and fans came on. Is this a good deal or should I pass? I'm handy but I've never done anything like this before.

Thanks

I have a few friends who are HVAC specialists, and I was just talking to one about nearly the same issue and he said that you can still get R134A (maybe, some places will not sell it to you unless you are certified to handle it, this may depend on your state). However, he said you would need some special equipment to re-charge a small system like a freezer or refrigerator, that would likely be different from a car or home AC system. In short, it might not be a bad deal if you know someone who can recharge them for you, if not, you are likely to end up with dead weight sitting in your basement.
