So I live 2hrs South of Midwest Supplies and my wife was heading up to the Twin Cities, so I sent her with a list of ingredients to pick up for my first AG batch which was supposed to be an oatmeal stout. I listed the grains in 1/2 lb increments and planned on just measuring everything out once I got it. However, my wife (due to lack of communication on my part and no fault of her own) had all the grain put into one huge bag all mixed together- so my original recipe is toast. What I'm left with is the following ingredients for a 3 gallon batch:

Batch Size: 3 gallons

5 lbs. US 2-row 62.5%
1 lb Flaked Oats 12.5%
.5 lb Victory Malt 6.3
.5 lb Chocolate Malt 6.3
.5 lb Crystal 80L 6.3
.5 lb Roasted Barley 6.3

1.25 oz EKG @ 60min for 31 ibus
Irish Ale 1084

Basically, I'm just looking for input on what to expect out of this (a roasty oatmeal brown ale?) and if there is anything I could add to make it more palatable. I planned to do a single infusion mash @ 152 and to batch sparge but am open for suggestions here too. Also, since it's my first AG batch with pre-crushed grains, I'm anticipating 65% total efficiency- is this reasonable? Thanks in advance!

That's pretty darn close to Jamil's Oatmeal Stout in Brewing Classic Styles. His has .75 lbs of both Choc and Victory Malt; that's the main difference. He hops with EKG at 36 IBU (only a 60 min addition) with an OG of 1.055. 65% is reasonable... you might get more than that considering it's a pretty small grain bill (lots of sparge water). BEWARE of a stuck sparge though, with the oats (don't run off your wort too quickly).

That's pretty much an Irish stout... granted you have 50/50 roast/choc and oats instead of flaked barley, but it isn't far removed from a Beamish type recipe that I do. A full pound of roasted grains is a little high, but you should be fine. I think it will be a nice stout, quite tasty... If it was me I would maybe cut the hops back just a tad since the higher than normal proportion of roast grains will add a little bitterness, but that is a matter of personal taste.
