I have been an extract brewer for a little while now and my friend and I are looking to create our first original recipe. We are looking at doing a west coast style Double IPA and I was hoping that others may be able to give some feedback.

The original gravity is 1.076 and final gravity is 1.014. Beersmith has the IBUs at 131.8 and the ABV is 8.1.

1 lbs Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM) Grain 1
1 lbs Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 2
6 lbs 9.6 oz Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Grain 3
2 lbs Light Dry Extract (8.0 SRM) Grain 4
1.0 oz Amarillo Gold [8.5%] - Boil 60 min Hops 5
0.5 oz Centennial [10.0%] - Boil 60 min Hops 6
0.5 oz Chinook [13.0%] - Boil 60 min Hops 7
1.0 oz Amarillo Gold [8.5%] - Boil 30 min Hops 8
0.5 oz Centennial [10.0%] - Boil 30 min Hops 9
1.0 oz Cascade [5.5%] - Boil 30 min Hops 10
0.5 oz Chinook [13.0%] - Boil 30 min Hops 11
1.0 oz Cascade [5.5%] - Boil 15 min Hops 12
1.00 Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15 min) Misc 13
1.00 tsp Yeast Nutrient (Boil 5 min) Misc 14
1 pkgs American Ale (Wyeast Labs #1056) Yeast 15
1 lbs Corn Sugar (Dextrose) (0.0 SRM) Grain 16
2.0 oz Cascade [5.5%] - Dry Hop 3 days Hops 17

Thanks for the help.

I entered a 2-row 1.075 O.G. into Qbrew with your yeast and got a 1.019 F.G. I then added 1 lb of Carapils and the O.G. went to 1.080, and the F.G. at 1.020. I may be wrong here, but your math sounds a little goofy. Not yours personally, but Beer Smith...
Just for the heck of it, try Brew Mate, Qbrew, or Brew Target, and see what numbers they give you. :)

I'll check it out. It may be how my friend has his system set up in beersmith. Any thoughts on the hop schedule? Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

if you have extra hops i would add a hop stand and change your crystal to something lighter like 10 or 20L

I understand your wanting to use a lot of "C" hops per the style, but your bittering hops are a little low, I think. I would use something like Magnum which could be up to 14%, as the bittering charge. I suggest you rethink your dry hopping. With the variety of hops you are using, and then just dry hopping with Cascade, are you sure you only want a one note finish? I may be wrong here, but since it appears you are going for a floral, fruity type melody of hops, using C,C, and C, consider this if you might for the dry hop addition: Amarillo, US Golding, Simcoe, and Citra. They will give you the orange, grapefruit, citrus, and apricot profile it appears you want. Or I may be 100% wrong too.

I agree with changing the bittering addition to something like magnum. Take those nice citrusy hops and move them to the last 15 minutes or dryhop. Also I'd suggest moving all of your 30 minute hops to at least 20 minutes. You'll get some flavor at 30 but not that much, and no aroma. So, basically I'd suggest having one large bittering addition and spread the rest of the hops our over the last 20 minutes plus dryhop. I haven't tested the fwh additions too much so I'm not going to comment on that.

I'd lose the carapils. I agree with others about filling out your dry hop and using something like magnum for your bittering charge.

Thanks for all the feedback. I really appreciate it. We did add Magnum to the 60 min, shifted the rest to 20 min and less, and added Amarillo to the dry hop. Should be making it Sunday. Can't wait to see how it comes out.
