I am gonna be brewing this Sat. I have had this idea of making a Mocha Porter. I have only brewed 4 batches so far and use kits from my local store that have extract, hop pellets, & steeping grains. i like this method so far and have become comfortable with it and don't feel ready to leap into all grain just yet. with that being said, my local store has a porter kit that is very nice. But I want to "tweak it" adding some coffee and chocolate. But I have no clue when to add the tweaks or even what form. do I use coaco powder, choc syrup, do i brew the coffee? cold brew? hot brew? how much,,, that sort of thing.. So if anyone could help or if you have a recipe I would be very thankful for your help.

My recommendation is to using specialty grains from you LHBS. They have some that will give a chocolate flavor and some that will give a coffee flavor. You steep them at the beginning of the brew session, before you bring the water to a boil and add the extract.

I see you're from Raleigh, so I'm assuming you go to American Brewmaster, like I do. I know that they usually have chocolate malt and even light chocolate malt, but I don't recall ever seeing any coffee malt in there. Northern Brewer has coffee malt, if you want to order on-line.

I've heard of people mixing coffee grounds into their grains and I've heard of people pouring prepared coffee into their wort. I think either of those would work.

Do you know what steeping grains you're already using?

Yes I shop at AB in Raleigh. Not sure which steeping grains they have in their porter kit but that is what I have been using in the past. I did not realize they had chocolate LME. I though they only had light, amber, dark, ect...
Maybe I'll give that a try this goround. Thanks.

They don't have chocolate extract, they have chocolate malt specialty grains. They sell it by the half pound, I believe. You buy it there, they'll let you grind it up there at the store, then you steep it, just like the steeping grains that come in your pack.

While at AB the guy told me to simply prepare the porter kit as normal, and after fermentation to add cocoa powder and cold brewed coffee to the beer, then keg. gonna brew tomorrow and will let ya know in a few weeks how it turns out. thanks for your advice.
