Hello all, this is my first post here. After lurking in the forums for quite some time, and doing lots of reading (john palmer rocks) i have decided to brew my first batch. All the equipment i need to brew (a two bucket kit) was handed down to me by a friend who tried it once and was discouraged with the results. I think impatience was his downfall. However john palmers suggested recipe was a pale ale. I love wheat beer and would like to do a batch. But am unsure on a good total begginers recipe that would yield good results. If anyone out there has any recipe they would like to share, or any first time brewers advise please share with me, i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

I am new to the forum as well, and also read Palmer's book. I currently have a batch of the ale that he suggested as a starter recipe in my fermenter right now. It is on its 5th day, and seems to be proceeding nicely. I didn't use a kit, but rather went my LHBS and purchased the ingredients individually. I found that his instructions for a first time brew were excellent. Pay great heed to the parts about cleaning and sanitation. They are the most important, from what I have gathered in my humble experiences as well as talking with more seasoned brewers.

Here's an all extract recipe for a Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier clone (from Beer Captured)...it's about as simple as it gets.

6 lbs. Muntons Wheat DME
1 oz. German Hallertau hops @ 4.5% AA
Yeast: Wyeast 3068 Weihenstephan Weizen

Heat 1.5 gals water to boiling, remove from heat and add extract, top off to 2.5 gals, bring to a boil, toss in hops and boil for 60 minutes. Cool the wort, pour in fermenter and top off to 5 1/8 gallons. Pitch yeast after wort cooled below 80.

hey guys thanks for all the responses. my wife and kid are leaving this weekend to go back home to OK so that leaves me with a free week to brew beer and walk around in my bath robe. i cant wait.

It's good to know you have a bathrobe.

One of the first things a bachelor learns when he gets out on his own is it's NOT a good idea to fry bacon naked. Bad, bad, bad!
You have any scars to back you up on that one hb? Sounds fun to me :drunk:

Nothing I can show you during prime time. :D

(No scars, actually, just making a joke,)

I laughed out loud when I read this! :p I have a friend in Texas who did have a scar on his most prized apendage and it was from just that - frying bacon naked. True story.

How on earth did he get a scar on his big toe by frying bacon?

I guess I better get a bathrobe, and maybe some safety boots, for when I'm brewing the traditional Bacon Pale Ale... :cross: :drunk:

I don't want to know how you knew about this scar, so please keep that story to yourself. :)

(with a nostolgic smile) :)

it seems like so long ago. i decided to look at some of my first few posts while enjoying my second beer of the night. (both of which were of our own stock) it is truly amazing how much you can learn about something if you devote yourself to it. too bad i didnt do this in high school chemistry. that C- still stings :D
