Last February I brewed a Westveletern 12 clone. I only yielded about 3.8 gallons due to a massive overflow during fermentation. In mid-March I bottled the beer in Belgian bomber bottles which I corked but didn't cage. I tasted some test bottles along the way and at about 5 months the beer changed from pretty good to pretty awesome (tastes a lot like St. Bernardus Abt 12). I just recently lost 2 bombers due to the corks blowing out of the bottles (I have since caged the rest of the bottles).

The bombers are still mostly full but the beer is flat. I wanted to try and re-claim the beer. I was thinking about transferring the beer in PET soda bottles, buying a "Carbonator - ball lock poppet to soda cap fitting" and re-carbonating using a portable CO2 keg charger.

Has anyone gone through this trouble to re-carb beer and how did it turn out?
I would normally just take the loss but I only have a dozen bombers left and I have a lot of time invested in this beer.

Later this month I will be taste testing this beer up against an actual bottle of Westy 12.

Thanks.

I've never had to do this but couldn't you just use carb drops & re cap? Also transferring to another bottle will introduce oxygen into your beer
