Just bought a 3 roller grain mill.

I have set the rollers to mill at 0.8mm (0.031 inch)

I have pretreated the malt with 2% water by volume.

I have attached a picture of the grist. I am pretty happy with the result, but for you grist experts how does this look?

Also what mash eff gains should I expect? I know that depends on my lhbs but for those folks that switched to milling yourself what was your experience.

Thanks

It looks like all the hulls have been broken open. What type of brewing do you do. If BIAB I would tighten it up quite a bit. For a traditional mash tun I would brew with that and see how close to a stuck sparge you get. If it drains really easy, tighten it up some more until draining gets slow. Then back off a little.

You should be able to get 80-85% mash efficiency when you mill yourself, using a conventional mash tun. That's what I get. With BIAB perhaps somewhat higher by milling finer and using a squeeze/dunk-sparge/squeeze regimen.
