You know how some people turn the simple act of drinking into an unnecessary event?
Im not talking about hosting a bottle share/tasting. Im talking turning the simple act of opening a bottle into an elaborate situation. Some are really into photography so they spend minutes/hours creating the perfect backdrop and use props to photograph the experience of opening a beer. Others (myself included) reach for the proper glassware. Then there is Mr showboat who parades around displaying the bottle and posing with it like he is Vanna White while calling everyone he knows to brag about what he is about to open.
The newest trend im seeing/hearing about now is decanting. Shy of Armand telling us to do it and serving that Zenne beer on site that way...why is this now a thing? Or is this how things like this start? Ive seen/heard it used so many times now since that beer came out and its not even exclusive to lambic anymore.
Overcarbed saison - yeah I didnt like it.
-Response "Did you decant it? It would be better if you did."
Terrible boozy beer - no good this is the worst thing I put in my mouth.
-Response "Its so much better if you open the bottle a few days prior to drinking it and let it breathe or decant it."
One off lambic that tastes indifferent to their standard everyday offering - I dont understand the hype.
-Response "Clearly you didnt drink it both decanted and not decanted to understand."
I understand creating an environment in which we get the most satisfaction from an experience (such as the photography example I mentioned, proper glassware and even appropriate serving temperature.) But isnt it the fault of the brewer if we cannot simply open a bottle and enjoy it as-is? I fail to understand how decanting is any better than pouring the beer into any glass you wish and simply swirl it and take your time drinking it.
