I thought stopping drinking would make for a better night of sleep, but nope, nothing good has come out of it whatsoever.

I took a courageous 2 nights off of drinking last week. First night I didn't get more than 30 minutes of straight sleep. Second night wasn't as bad, but not as good as if I'd have had even 2-3 beers.

Last week sucked.

I hope I never get to this point in regards to drinking.

Power was shut off on Friday. No appointments available until Monday for it to be turned back on. According to my roommate (the homeowner, aka the one who pays the bills), "there was an error with DTE's autopay system and instead of looking into it they just shut our power off... [Because] they have a monopoly and know they can just **** people over."

No, there's certain times where explaining just isn't going to do **** and all the kid needs is a slap in the face.

Seriously though, sometimes the kid already knows what they're doing is wrong, and you just have to jumpstart their dumbfuck brain by putting the fear of God on them with a bellowing "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING"

I thought stu had a pretty good point, though -- it's not the first time I've seen people ripping on autism, but I admire the guys who called it out. I guess people are becoming more aware/compassionate about it.

I've started to realize this one guy I really don't like is an undiagnosed, high-functioning autistic (first time I've ever met anyone like this). It really shamed me. Hopefully arren grows up, too.

I'm of two minds because I think that, while his comment wasn't in good taste, it's not like he was really ripping on autists (I think that's the word?). But in general the world could use more civility (BRING BACK CIVILC). Then again, I think that this particular movement (at least in terms of what I see on talkbeer, which is the only place I'm exposed to it) is kind of strange in at least one aspect. I get the rationale for not liking the word "retarded"*, but so many of our words that express a similar sentiment started the same way (dumb, moron, psycho, spazz are some that occur to me immediately, I'm sure there are more). It seems pretty obvious to me that the way the language works is this:

1) There is a need for a clinical word to describe people who, for various reasons, have significant below-average mental abilities.
2) There is a need for insults, and preferably novel insults (because they become normalized after too long).
3) People borrow clinical words to make new insults.

So you essentially get on this euphemistic treadmill where clinicians make new terms for things, they're borrowed as slang, the slang gets normalized, and clinicians change their words. I'd be mildly surprised if whatever the new clinical term is ("mentally handicapped" I assume) isn't already somehow a slang word. Its length may short-circuit this somewhat, but then again "mental retardation" is pretty long (and reminds that the word actually comes from a latin word meaning "to slow, hinder", which isn't actually a phrase all that different from handicapped).

This got kind of long, but it's something I'm reminded of whenever this happens.

As someone who has an autistic person in my family, it definitely struck a nerve. I'll also never understand the "humor" behind people trying to be funny, macho ******** and talk about slapping around or degrading their kids and/or wife. That **** isn't funny in any context.

It's the filter for the asterisked word in my post above. I think it's a poor match but whatever.

Personally, if we're going to filter words, I'd rather the filters be surrealist and absurd. Make everything auto-correct to "pudding" or something.
