I think you're right, there are probably no good looking monkfish. Unless it's with that long term vision of the meat on a plate.

It's supposedly like eating lobster. I've had it once. A Malaysian friend cooked it tandoori style. I didn't really understand what I was eating, but it was good and fairly spicy. We'd been drinking for awhile so the specific memories are a bit unclear.

I believe fake crab is usually Alaskan ******* and crab juice. monkfish might be just as expensive as the real thing.

Where I grew up there was fish we called lawyers(burbot) and some people also called those poor man lobster.

Monkfish is really good, I get it all the time, they would not waste it in fake crab

I've pulled monkfish up, they're pretty damned freaky looking, but they're nowhere near as nasty as wolffish.
First time I brought one of those to the surface I was looking for something to just cut the line off
